Welcome to my Blog!

My name is Suzanne Thompson.  I enjoy photography, dining at non-chain restaurants, trying new vegetarian recipes, reading, blogging, and exploring new locations...the three most valuable are family, faith, and friends.

I was born in England, moved to Ethiopia when I was four, then to America when I was seven.  In American, I have lived in eight states.  Bob and I were married in January 2010 and we currently live in California and North Carolina.

Whole Foods Market

When I’m in the Costa Mesa area, I always enjoy going to Whole Foods Market. I love their selection of fruits, vege’s, cheeses and bakery items. I always browse through the bakery section just to see what they have. This evening, I purchased this colorful fruit tart. Bob arrives this evening, so we can both enjoy this special treat this weekend.

San Bernardino County Fair

This evening, I met up with a group of friends at the San Bernardino County Fair. The kids in the group had a great time of the rides as well as the excitement of seeing all the animals.

Escalate Live 2010

Yesterday and today, I had the opportunity to attend the Escalate Live in Newport Beach, CA. Bob was going to attend too, but had to go to Washington DC to receive the award in the prior post (click here to read about it). I was able to meet up with Matthias from Vohwinkel Photography in Killeen, TX. I first met Matthias over a decade ago and it has been fun to watch him get married, start a family and a photography business.

What a great event to attend. We had a great platform of wonderful speakers. The Escalate Speakers were: [B]ecker, Dane Sanders, David Jay, Jasmine Star, Jeremy Cowart, Jerry Ghionis, Jessica Claire, and Julieanne Kost. I won a large door prize of a free year with ShootQ.

Birthday Celebration

This evening, Bob took me the Farm Artisan Foods Restaurant in Redlands, CA for my birthday. Last year, we met for the first time on my birthday and he took me there. As it was our first date, we only had a iPhone camera with us. Click here to see last years post. Now a year later, we are married…what a difference a year makes! Just like last year, he spoke with the chef to request they make a non-menus dessert for my birthday…strawberry shortcake. It was delicious with a not too sweet biscuit style cake with a sugary crackly top, then filled with fresh cream and strawberries.

Tofurious and Tomato Mozzarella Salad

The speaker for Thursday evenings OC SmugMug Meeting was Tofurious. Before he started his presentation, we were able to look at a copy of the Grace Ormond book, “being in love never goes out of style“. It’s a large, 416 page, 10+ pound book of gorgeous wedding photographs. As the book was so large, we were quickly looking through it as fast as the pages would turn. One picture that caught my eye was a tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil salad. I bought the ingredients to recreate the salad, and here is my version. When Bob and I have eaten at nice Italian restaurants, the balsamic vinegar is always thick, unlike the water substance on the grocery store shelves. So, I put some in a pan and simmered it to keep the flavor, but thicken the sauce…the result was sweet flavor like the high end restaurants. Now I just need to learn how the teardrop drizzles are put on the plate!

Speaking of Grace Ormond, we were told that the following picture from our January wedding has been submitted for a cover competition for her wedding magazine. So, if it wins and you see the picture on the cover, then you’ll know who it is!

What a Difference a Year Makes

Today is one year from when Bob and I first met. What a great year it has been getting to know each other…and getting married. So many people have asked how we met as Bob lives in NC and I’m in CA. We met through a dating site for people from our denomination. We also have several acquaintances in common and have lived in the some of the same places, but at different times.

His profile read, “Are you an avid adventurer…traveling? Outdoor expeditions? Cooking a new dish?” Sounded interesting! He mentioned in what he was looking for, that he believed in “wherever God leads” and that he trusted him whole-heartedly, but some of the things he liked were as follows: “Someone who can be comfortable in jeans while hammering a nail, yet elegant in an evening gown…at home in a drytop while paddling a kayak in an exotic location, and attractive in a stylish dress at church…enjoying being in an apron while cooking gourmet food together, or curling up together in pajamas on the couch for movie night…assertive in gortex on the side of a mountain, sweats in a gym, a swimsuit on a catamaran in the Caribbean, or a business suite at a meeting. And most of all, a courageous warrior princess that arises each day to put on the full armor of God”

I had no idea what a drytop was and haven’t been on a catamaran or kayak, but since I’ve been on plenty of other boats and am CFO of a yacht facility, I figured that should count for something! We’ve had lots of fun traveling, watching movies on the couch, cooking gourmet meals, sharing spiritual devotions, attending church and doing projects with the house and RV. I’m so exciting to see what adventures we’ll experience in the year ahead.

April 26, 2010 - 2:24 am -brittany- - What a fun get to know you post! We have two couples in our lives that met on eHarmony! One has been married for I think 8 years now and the other almost 2, but both couples are some of the happiest we know :) What a fun shot of your hubs! Great light!

More Friends

This weekend, I flew in and out of Knoxville, TN were I lived for a couple years before moving to California. It was great seeing familiar places and I drove by the house I used to live in…it still looked great. On Sunday, I got a chance to visit Kent, Joan and their son. She fixed a great meal and we chatted, then walked to the Tennessee River just down the street from their house. Their son has such an outgoing personality. When I lived in Knoxville, he was a huge train fan…once telling telling his mom (very seriously) that he didn’t think he’d ever get married as he didn’t think he’d find someone that liked trains as much as he did!

Tennessee was beautiful with all the flowering blossoms. The redbuds were the most abundant that I’ve ever seen.

Visiting with Friends

This weekend, I got to spend time with some friends that I knew back in high school. I had only seen one of them in the past five years. Even though we’re all friends on Facebook, it’s not the same as seeing and catching up in person.

Loved capturing this picture of Janene and her two sons and her niece (whose dad was in my sisters class)

…and this one of Ron and Sharon’s two girls.

Ron, who was once a classmate, is now President of the school we all attended.
